Kiara sat on the sofa in her dormitory, a long string of thoughts, never ending, crossing her mind. It was Christmas eve. Tomorrow would be Christmas, and Kiara would be alone. The sophomore sighed, bringing her knees to her chest to hug them tightly, she never asked, or wanted to be alone, it just... Happened. If anyone knew about this, what she really felt inside, some would probably say she was feeling sorry for herself, others would pity her, and Kiara wanted neither from anyone, so she kept silent about her past. As Kiara slowly died inside, the clock kept ticking, not waiting for her to repair, and the world kept eyes on her, as they waited for her to break. She refused to believe that one day, that could just happen, so she hardly thought about it. She liked to tell herself she was a strong person, able to hold a smile. Kiara thought she was good enough because no one ever asked her what was wrong. She was glad.
She finally forced herself to stop thinking, and rose from the sofa, looking around the room once, and then at the clock on the wall. It read 4:55. The dance was at six, which gave Kiara just over an hour to get ready for it. At first, she hadn't known whether she'd wanted to go or not, because she had no one to go with, but she'd made up her mind. She was going to meet people, she was going to make sure her Christmas wasn't as lonely. She wasn't going to achieve much if she moped around her dorm all night. She ran over to the window first, to look down upon the other students who were already changed and ready to have fun. They looked awesome, with girls in prom dresses, and guys in suits. Kiara just stayed by the window for a couple of minutes, wishing she could be like them, or with them. The window was cold against her warm hand, she could feel the draft on her face. The light snow on the ground told her it'd been snowing, but it hadn't really settled. Kiara thought it never snowed in California, but apparently it did, maybe the temperature had dropped this year.
She turned away from the window, and headed over to her bed where she had laid out her outfit earlier; a beautiful red dress, a silver cardigan to go over the top of it, a silver tiara, silver gloves, and silver jewelery. She smiled. Everything was just red and silver, but at least it matched the mood, right? Red and silver were Christmas-y colours, were they not? Kiara felt the smooth material of the dress and left her dorm to use the huge bathroom every girl had to share; it was like a locker room, really. First, Kiara took a quick but thorough shower, wrapped a towel around herself, brushed her teeth and ran back to her dorm before anyone could see her looking a wreck with wet hair, and no make up on. That was probably the only normal thing about her, she hated looking terrible in front of people. She kicked the door shut, locked it, and then pulled the curtains on the windows across, so she knew she had complete privacy while she got ready. She dried her body off, and put on her underwear, before moving to the mirror to do her hair and make up first, she didn't want to ruin her outfit.
The sophomore stared at her reflection for a couple of seconds, before she tore her eyes away to find the hair dryer. After it was dried, she brushed it over, put in clip-in extensions, and back combed it all until her midnight her was big, and exactly the way she wanted it. She then went on to doing her make up, eyes thickly lined with liquid eyeliner, and mascara to top it all off. She knew it was a bit much, but it did bring out her dark green eyes, probably the only thing she really liked about herself. She tainted her pale-ish complexion with light pink blush, and that was all. She didn't like to colour her lips much, so she only put a bit of light coloured lip-balm on to make them look a little healthier.
After all that, she got herself into her outfit and she was done. She looked in the mirror a few times, and actually liked the way it looked against her slim body. What would the others think? She didn't know. She just wanted to go. It was five minutes until the dance actually began. She picked up her bag, including her phone, camera and emergency make up, and locked up her dorm, setting out to the school's main hall, where the dance would be held.
When she got there, she opened the large double doors, to see how beautiful the place actually looked. Tables and chairs around the edge of the room, where students sat and talked to each other, the live band, on the stage, playing some of their own music, along with a few Christmas songs on the list. The food table, below the stage, open already for people to get whatever they wanted, and then the dance floor, where, obviously, people were dancing. It looked awesome with the decorations on the wall, the huge Christmas tree to the side of the stage, and everything else. A smile crept up onto Kiara's face as she looked around for any sign of someone she knew, but there was no one. Instead of heading out to dance on her own, she moved along, close to the walls, and waited for someone she knew to arrive, or someone to approach her and strike up a conversation. The night seemed like it would be a good one, and Kiara was going to make sure she enjoyed it.

[th]christmas time was something riley had only been introduced to in the last few years, when he was ten years old. westernisation in japan had brought about christianity thus bringing about christmas. riley’s family didn’t actively celebrate it. sure, they put a christmas tree up and decorated it. sure, they put some decorations up around their house, and sure, they gave presents to their friends and family, and spent time with each other, but they didn’t believe in jesus. you could go as far to say that the kimura’s were atheist and celebrated the festival in order to pass along presents and spread the love, but riley would deny being atheist, and he would say that he believed in… well, he was still questioning his beliefs, but he did believe in reincarnation and spirits watching over you – watching, not interfering.
he had considered not going to the dance, but he decided that he may as well. he could easily pull himself out, and besides, there were people playing some of their music live and riley liked to listen to other people’s music and take mental notes of what to do and what not to do in his music. he smiled ever so slightly to himself. the brunet was pissed off for being shoved into doing a few songs at the new year’s festival on the bluewater bay pier, but he actually didn’t mind. more popularity, right? and plus, he was starting to feel stressed. he wanted to let himself be known in california, it was annoying to keep such a huge secret to himself. but still, the japanese teenager was not fond of screaming fans crowding him and such. he swore he had turned claustrophobic because of that. still, at least some fans were understanding and didn’t crowd him that much, and spoke to him as a normal person.
riley breathed out a sigh as did up the buttons of his black pinstriped white shirt, leaving the neck open to show the black cord necklace that had an orange gemstone moon hanging off it. he moved over to his bed, taking the waistcoat off it and pulling it onto his slim frame, doing the buttons up. after that job was done he slid his phone into his right pocket, making sure it was on silent so it would vibrate should his manager want him (though not in bed… hopefully). black formal trousers already on, riley’s next item of clothing pulled on was a belt around him. he took a pocketwatch off his desk, refusing to put his blazer jacket on at the moment, and clipped the chain to a button hole, placing the actual watch in the left pocket. he smiled to himself. in the past few months, riley had found himself with a fondness for nineteenth century clothes, and he paused, looking at the thin crimson ribbon on his desk too. he picked it up, eyeing it for a moment, before popping his collar up and tying the ribbon in a loopy bow, just touching the top of his waistcoat. he pulled his collar back down and went back to his bed, picking up the jacket and pulling it on, not bothering to button it. instead he picked a small box off his bed, opening it to check that a certain something was still there before shutting it and putting it in his jacket pocket. the brunet pulled on his boots – he was attached to these, too – and tucked the trouser legs over the boots. thankfully the boots could pass off as dress shoes, with an inch heel.
there was something he was forgetting, he swore. he glanced around, and then noticed his trilby hat lying on his pillow. the brunet hopped over and picked it up, popping it on his head before putting his thumbs in the belt loops of his trousers. was that anything? as he scanned his vip room for anything else, he caught sight of his face – his eyes were lined with black eyeliner and his long, girl-ish eyelashes were brought out more by mascara, and there was a small shine to his lips coming from his lipgloss. such make-up he wore was normal, and in fact he even wore proper lipstick at concerts as well as wear nail varnish. damn, he was a right doll sometimes.
after pushing this out of his mind, riley travelled out of his room, closing and locking the door and putting keys in his trouser pocket. riley was guessing it was only five minutes before the dance actually began, so he had time to walk slowly. hell, he didn’t even care if he made an accidental entrance. he was used to people staring at him, whether it be in awe or irritation. he reached the corridor leading to the hall and he noticed a girl in a red dress walking into the hall, and he immediately noticed it to be kiara foxglove. he smiled a little, hoping she would like the gift he had got for her, and walked on forwards, hoping that his eyes wouldn’t start getting irritated again by the contact lenses in his eyes.
as he had entered after kiara, she wouldn’t have noticed him. quietly, he snuck along the shadows of the wall after her, not stopping to look at the decorations around him, and he stopped near to her. riley pulled and span kiara towards him, catching her on her back as he leaned her back with his other hand on the hand further from him. riley grinned down at his friend, hoping he had surprised her with his dancing skills and reaction times, before he pulled her back up, helping her right her position, and he ran his eyes down kiara’s clothes. damn, she looked good. if he wasn’t gay he would be attracted to her, fuck yeah he would!
riley pulled the box in his jacket pocket out, passing it to the black haired girl in front of him, smiling brightly.
“merry christmas, miss foxglove,” he almost sung, bowing down in front of her in the traditional Japanese way before he stood up straight, finally allowing his chocolate brown eyes to take a look at the scene of the hall, smiling at the beautiful decorations. it was even better than last year’s dance…▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪ ooc. outfit x kiara's necklace x riley's trilby [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,350,true][bg=white] |

Kiara watched as the live band began playing their first song, which had quite a fast beat, and had a Christmas-y vibe to it. The band all looked to be either seniors or college students, and they were all very talented with their instruments. The guy who played the piano/keyboard was also the singer, by the looks of it. He was the only one with a mic in front of him. She let their music calm her, even though it was more of a tune to dance to instead of relax to. As long as it made a nice sound in Kiara's ears, she was happy. That's the way she'd always seen music, she only liked it if it sounded good to her, and not anyone else. She wouldn't copy someone to make them proud of her or something. That was just... Trying too hard to impress someone who wasn't worth it. Ugh. Kiara hated it when people did that.
She was quickly broken out of her thoughts when she felt someone spin her around and catch her before she hit the ground. Kiara was okay at dancing... When she was expecting someone to dance with her. This time, it came as a complete shock to her. Who did that? She pushed the dizziness of her mind aside, and forced her eyes to focus. It was her friend, Riley, who, over the months, she'd become very close to. He was probably her best friend at the school so far. She smiled up at him, more in a laughing way than anything, before saying, "Well hello there, Riley, this was pretty much the last thing I expected from anyone tonight." She laughed as he helped her back on her feet. She noticed how they both started checking out each other's outfits at the same time. He looked awesome, in fact, better than awesome. He looked amazing. Kiara didn't really know what to say to him, so she kept it in her mind. It made her wonder what Riley though of her outfit.
He then surprised her by handing her a little box, one that usually held jewelery in them. She gasped a little, smiling at the same time. 'Merry Christmas, Miss Foxglove', he had said. Kiara wasn't expecting a present from anyone, so this had made her feel more than happy. She just couldn't wait, her childish side was taking over. She opened the box excitedly, and saw one of the most beautiful necklaces she'd ever seen. She gasped again, squealing a little, too. "Oh my God, Riley, thank you so much!" She leapt forward and gave him the biggest, most crushing hug she'd ever given anyone. He'd made her whole Christmas complete. She couldn't thank him enough for making her this happy. She let him go after a moment, grinning, "Merry Christmas, Riley."
Suddenly, she realised she hadn't got anything to give him back. Her face fell for a second, at the thought. She felt like a bitch. "Oh..." She blinked a few times, dropping her gaze to the floor, "I haven't got anything to give you... Do you mind if I get you something later? Tomorrow, maybe? I haven't got anything better to do, so.." She cut off. Her first lonely Christmas. It made her heart drop slightly. It wasn't enough to make her awesome mood fall, though. Riley had made her extra happy by giving her the key necklace. She swore to herself that she would let nothing her her down. This was going to be her night to have fun, and smile. She realised that before, when Riley made her laugh, she actually meant it, for what seemed like the first time in forever. Kiara was actually glad she came to this dance after all.
She followed his eyes over the decorations, over the people who were now piling in through the doors, some eating, some dancing, some talking. "Everything looks so awesome, doesn't it?" She grinned at him again, pulling down on the ends of her dress lightly at the same time, "I'm glad I decided to come here after all. At first I thought I was just going to stay in all night." She looked around again, "Wanna go get us some snacks?" She asked with a smile.

[th] “well hello there, riley, this was pretty much the last thing i expected from anyone tonight.”
riley grinned in response, glad that his good friend didn’t freak out about being suddenly grabbed and spun around. as he helped her up, the brunet eyed his friend’s outfit. it clung to her figure quite well, and the red actually looked good against her skin, and it was also dulled down by the light grey shrug she had on. and the jewellery she had on… those were quite pretty. obviously riley wouldn’t wear them, though if he were a girl he might… actually, the japanese teenager would consider wearing them anyway, because, after all, he was quite feminine. it wasn’t something he was proud of, but hey, it was interesting and added to his qualities. plus it was amusing to see him having his squeamish girl moments… apparently.
and here comes a squeal of surprise. riley stumbled back a little when kiara leaped at him to give him a huge, crushing hug that caused him to cough a few times due to it preventing him from breathing. he was glad that the dark haired sophomore let go after a moment, though, so he took a deep breath and smiled back at her. he righted his balance, and as he did so the japanese male noticed her face fall. he raised an eyebrow, listening to her apologising words and he shook his head. “iie, kiara—no, i mean. you don’t have to get anything for me, but if it would make you happier and not guilty, then feel free to do so. i’m not actually expecting anything,” he smiled a little at her.
“it does. and everyone looks quite good tonight,” the sophomore ran his chocolate brown eyes over the other students and then at the band playing on the stage. it was pretty good music, considering it was not his style. that was one thing he was proud of, about himself. the fact that he wasn’t biased about music and could find good and bad points in everything made him proud. well, it was harder to find such points in his music, but he knew where the bad and good points were. “well, i decided to come here. it was either come here and socialise, or stay in my dormitory and sleep,” he grinned a little, “and read, and play video games.”
riley glanced over to the snack tables, noticing that there weren’t many people there yet, meaning that they had better grab some snacks first. “before the other pigs eat ‘em, yeah,” the brunet said with a large grin on his face. “come on, then~” he said, moving around small groups of people, absolutely refusing to go onto the dance floor. he was a fair dancer, but tonight he wasn’t in an extreme mood to actually dance. upon reaching the snack table, riley turned around a little to watch for kiara, making sure she had ‘traversed the vast unknown full of animals in large festival spirit’ safely. once she reached him he asked, “i never actually asked. what is your favourite food?”
